Marion Piñeros

Marion Piñeros is a medical doctor from the Rosario University in Bogotá, Colombia and further studied public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, UK. She worked for more than 13 years at the National Cancer Institute in Colombia, where she was responsible for the Public Health Division.
She joined the Cancer Surveillance Branch at International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2015 as a scientist where she is responsible for the Latin American Hub in the Global Initiative on Cancer Registry Development (GICR). She collaborates with general aspects of GICR, regarding training, network development, and positioning cancer registries in public health surveillance.
Her main interest has been the production, dissemination, and use of information for cancer control. She has advocated for a clear understanding among stakeholders of the role of population-based cancer registries in cancer surveillance, delivering technical assistance for cancer registry development, as well as contributing to descriptive epidemiology studies of cancer in different areas. She has been closely involved together with other partners in the development of Essential TNM, a tool for cancer registries to improve availability of staging information.
