Odette Spruijt was Director of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Department of Palliative Medicine for almost 20 years. She has worked in all sectors of palliative care, community, hospice, and consultative services. She has held several leadership roles in palliative care in Australia and New Zealand, including past president of Australia New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine, previous board member of Palliative Care Victoria, and ex-officio member of the board of the Chapter of Palliative Medicine. Her research interests include improving pain management through better assessment, documentation, audit, and clinical practices in cancer and procedural pain relief; enhancing quality improvement skills; and narrative medicine. She completed her PhD in 2020 at Lancaster University, in the UK, a narrative exploration of the experiences of palliative care doctors of the relief of patients’ suffering. She chairs the charity Australasian Palliative Link International and convened the Western Pacific Palliative Care Advocacy Network in 2020.
